Social Media Challenge #3- A Twitter Scavenger Hunt

In class, a chunk of our grade comes from 10 “social media challenges” that our professor gives us throughout this semester. He gave us one about a week ago where we had to generate hype about our university  by doing a social media scavenger hunt of sorts. We had to find specific places and people around the university and ask them different questions… my classmate Maggie and I teamed up and below are our combined efforts.

1. School Spirit (A Photo and a Quote)- Maggie and I had to find individuals on campus who showed support for Southeastern’s campus as a whole… so we found Mindamora Rocha and her “littles” Alayna Gipson and Jessica Spearman on the Sparks Dance Team shaking their tails off to support SE. Athletics.

2. One of our favorite eating establishments close to campus- – Maggie and I are both theatre majors and a lot of our friends are theatre majors. As theatre majors we usually end up doing things at an ungodly hour of the night/morning. The top of that list usually includes eating and so, as college students, we like to find good, cheap and fast food. Dandy Donuts is our’s and our friends favorite spot to relax after rehearsal and grab a homemade donut made by Anne and her husband, the cutest couple ever. (The picture includes our roommate Kelly and our friend Laura scarfing down some cake donuts).

3. Professor On Campus – We had to ask a professor that works at SE (although we couldn’t ask a professor who teaches in our major) about the roles social media plays in our society today and how their discipline uses social media to study the world. We chose Dr. Jacob Wallace, Associate Professor of Music and Director of Bands at SE, and he graciously complied. He said that social media is used to get the word out about different different musical perfomances and to collaborate with different musical artists. Screen Shot 2015-03-20 at 12.57.16 AM
4. Student on the Street- Mags and I had to find a random student here at SE and asked him/her “where they got their news” so we chose Taylor Hunt, a senior Vocal Performance Major. Taylor said that he gets his news from CNN and NPR and he gets much of his news from Facebook and Twitter feeds.

5. Academic Excellence- This one was tricky for us. There are a lot of different organizations on campus but then, through our friend Meagan Newman (head of Cardinal Key), we discovered that Cardinal Key was inducting new members that week so we had Meagan and members new and old take a selfie during induction.

6. Scenic Spot- Maggie and I knew exactly what we wanted to do when we read this. As theatre majors, a generous portion of our time is spent at The New Theatre Building (we lovingly call it The Playhouse) so it was the perfect spot for us. This a place wehere we create. The scene shop, costume shop and a blackbox-type theatre is housed here as well as different theatre and communications classes.

7. Something you didn’t know about campus- Maggie and I know of a hidden gem on campus that has a history of its own. The Theatre Costume Archive, where more than 1,000 costumes are held and appraised for over $60, 000… it’s also a place try on silly hats.

8. Fanatic Fan- Margaret and I had to find a student that knows about sports and can tell us about both the men’s and women’s basketbal season and how it was shaping up. I found a fantastic person named Madison Thames, junior Journalism major and member of the Women’s Basketball Team. She gave us a great, thought-out, enthusiastic blurb about how both teams were holding their own and how they were facing off against ECU that Thursday.

9. Extracurricular Extravaganza- Les Misérables opened in two weeks and Maggie and I both didn’t see much of anything else except Les Misérables. So what better extracurricular activity could we think of than rehearsals. Students, faculty and alumni came together every night for a little over a month to create a musical of revolutionary proportions for the Se and Durant community. We snagged a snippet from backstage so all of twitter could here part of “At the End of the Day” sung by the Women’s Ensemble.

10. On Our Own- we had to come up with #10 by ourselves. Maggie and I became friend by our late night homework parties and so we decided to highlight our times spent together with friend Minda. We get goofy but gt work done. Whether it be our Fundamentals of Design homework or our Physical Science homework.

Another part of this Social Media Challenge was to interact with our classmates via twitter. We had to include the top five tweets from others:

1. Taylor Howard showing off a friend showing off her artistic skills by participating in the Window decorating contest.

2. Ashlee Tom found a hidden gem in the SE Library in a first edition copy of Lewis Carol’s through the Looking Glass.

3. Kaylie Baxter showing off a student’s SE spirit and tells what he likes about SE.

4.Maggie Wilson showcases the Henry G. Bennet library and tells us what Saupere Aude means… it means “dare to be wise.”

5. Shayla McDonell had her friends do kissy faces in SE’s famous kissing circle.

And respond to others to generate hype about what we are posting (Maggie and I did these seperately).

1. I know Natalie decently well and she is wealth of knowledge about the professional theatre world.

2. Me figuring out that I can be pretty oblivious when I want to be… and Maggie didn’t judge me for it.

3. Finding out that I missed a poetry slam due to rehearsal….

4.  Me commenting on the the fact that my friend Dario was making SE proud by moving on to bigger and better things as of May when graduates.

5. Learning about different, worldly traditions that students celebrate right here at Southeastern.

Overall, this social media challenge was a lot of fun for me. It made me pull some resources out of my pocket that I forgot were there and it made me realize all that SE had to offer like Meagan Newman and my friends in the journalism department. It was easier for me to find things that pertained to me, myself and I (like the Les Misérables video) than it was to find people and talk about things that I didn’t have a hand in (like Cardinal Key and the basketball teams).
